Chris Gregory

Chris Gregory is working on an ESRC project with Karen Sykes and Fiona Magowan entitled Domestic moral economy: An ethnographic study of value in the Asia-Pacific region. He has carried out long term fieldwork on the political economy and culture of rice in the Bastar plateau of India and more recently in Fiji on the transnational Indo-Fijian family. He is currently writing a paper on the moral dilemmas faced by poor peasant proprietors living in peri-urban settlements whose land can fetch very high prices if sold as urban residential land. Do they pass the farmland onto their sons as tradition demands or sell it and render their sons landless?
